Deep red ochre is a colour found in practically every culture from Venetian palaces to Vietnamese temples. Redearths were plentiful and relatively easy to come by so the colour is often associated with the colour for priming furniture and as the base coat for gilding. It is a wonderful colour on its own or as a base for other colours particularly when distressing.
